New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
