Probe Findings
Government officials disclosed that the UPS cargo plane’s left wing ignited and an motor fell off soon after liftoff from the aviation hub, leading to the aircraft to plummet and erupt into a blaze.
The safety agency has said it is examining the plane’s maintenance history, that was in the state for maintenance weeks prior to the incident.
Flight tracking information indicated the jet was on the tarmac in the Texas city from the start of last month to last week.
“We are cognizant that this plane was present in the facility,” said an investigator on later, not giving a precise time frame. “We will review every piece of maintenance that was performed, even the Texas period, all the way to the time of the journey.”
Findings of Critical Items
The cockpit voice recorder and information unit were retrieved, and the engine was found on the runway.
The units – known as data containers – were constructed to endure accident forces and intense temperatures from infernos, and they appeared to be intact when discovered within the remains. Investigators intend to reviewing information from the black boxes.
The plane’s final data recordings displayed an height of 475 feet and a rate of that speed ahead of the crash.
Service History
Per FAA records dated that date, a crack on a structural piece within the center wing fuel tank demanded maintenance.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which indicated it provides airframe maintenance for the company’s MD-11 and operates a repair facility in San Antonio, refused to speak, but stated it would assist completely when investigators approached it.
Operations Restart
In the meantime, UPS Worldport operations resumed that evening with its Next Day Air or night sort operation, spokesperson Jim Mayer confirmed. All three landing strips at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also back in operation.
The sorting center in this location is the firm’s most significant. The hub hires over 20,000 people in the region, manages 300 flights each day and organizes in excess of 400,000 packages each hour.
Public Support
A gathering was organized on the late afternoon of that date by the area labor union, which supports workers at the aviation hub, the firm’s biggest shipping facility.
The union chapter, which supports UPS workers, began the memorial with a moment of silence at that time, the rough time of the incident previously.
“This incident was so abrupt, so unexpected,” the mayor addressed the assembly of attendees. “No one had a chance to part to any one of those who we have mourned.”
